The Bill legend Alex Walkinshaw looks completely unrecognisable from his forgotten role in Grange Hi

Alex Walkinshaw is a familiar face on hit TV shows such as The Bill and Casualty. But these days he looks completely unrecognisable from his debut role in Grange Hill.

When he first appeared in The Bill, the Barking-born actor only featured in three episodes between 1992 and 1995 as as guest criminals. He was spotted by one of the producers of the police drama while acting at the Royal Court Theatre.

Later in 1999, Alex joined as a regular cast member, portraying PC Dale Smith, better known as “Smithy”, until 2001. He then returned in 2003 as his character was promoted to Sergeant.

It was actually on The Bill set where Alex met his ex-wife Sarah who worked as a make-up artist on the show. At the time Alex was engaged to someone else while Sarah was also in a relationship.

They married at the Queen’s House in Greenwich in June 2009. His best men were his co-star Rene Zagger, who played PC Nick Kelin, Scott Maslen who portrayed DS Phil Hunter as well as Jack Branning in Eastenders.

But before all of The Bill fame, Alex’s career began on children’s television. At just 12 years old he got the job as an extra on the highly successful series Grange Hill where he stayed for a year.

After leaving The Bill in 2010, Alex landed a role a year later in school-based drama Waterloo Road where he played PE teacher Jeremy ‘Jez’ Diamond replacing Paul Nicholas. Alex went on to be cast as nurse Adrian ‘Fletch’ Fletcher in Casualty.

His character made a permanent switch from Casualty in 2014 to its sister medical drama Holby City. Alex has two children who he shares with his ex-wife.

In 2019, following 11 years of marriage, the couple separated.
